THEY FIT! My carseats fit!!!!!

Man, we were so worried that we would have to purchase a new car b/c we have a Honda CRV & honestly, when I went out to measure the back seat, I had my doubts. It measured across w/ just barely enough room but you know how specs are, a little deceiving at times so I was concerned that when I order the Sunshine Radian 65's that they wouldn't fit across. Of course, part of me was excited about the prospects of looking for a bigger vehicle but there were many more parts of me that were dreading finding something that would fit us just right.

The carseats arrived on Monday. I was so stinkin' excited about new carseats that I opened one of them & was very impressed w/ how nice they were. Then, the worry set in. 3 of these? Across the back seat of my CRV? Doubtful.

Today I decided that I would go out & give it a go. The kids were sleeping & I had spare time on my hands. Huh? Did I just say spare time? Uh, yeah...anyway. So, I get the seat & off to the car I go. I put it in w/ a bit of trouble. Who would have thought that the latches needed to go a very specific way? Apparently I didn't but after 3 tries, I got the 1st seat in. Lookin' sharp! The seats match the interior of the car perfectly. Yeah, I'm such a chick.

Then I went to get the middle seat. Should have put that one in first. Duh. Oh well, it fit & that is all that mattered. Now, for some reason, the seatbelt isn't locking the seat in place so I am going to have to get Todd to fix that when he gets home.

Finally, it was time for the challenge. Out came the 3rd seat from its box & plastic covering. In to the car it went AND...

they FRIGGIN' FIT! Oh yeah baby! I'm in the money! Life is FANTABULOUS. No new car, no new car payment. Just my sweet ol' Brown Eyed Betty totin' around 3 1-yr olds. Does life get better than this?

Yay!! the Honda came through! Woot!

HAHA!!! Yes, I should let him sweat it out a bit. Hmmm, maybe I can convince him that I need that new Louis Vuitton. After all, it is cheaper than a new car!

I have a CRV and I'm glad you did this test, lol. I have a feeling I will be blessed with 3 in carseats [not all at the same time... but 3 in carseats all the same]. Hooray!

I'm glad you got the seats to fit! However, your little ones really should still be rear facing! Not only because they were preemies, but because keeping them rear facing is so much safer for any child than forward facing. The AAP also put out a new release about this also. 2 years and 30 pounds is the new recommendation, instead of the poor 1 year and 20 pounds. And it's AND 20 pounds, not or... so both requirements must be met.

I know you have always wanted what is best for your little ones, as does any other mother! I see how important it is for you to keep them healthy and not allow anyone over when they have colds, but it's equally important for them to be safe in the car as well. Please take the time and consider turning these young, premature children back rear facing until they are older.

Yeah!! That is awesome that they fit!
We have three in a Durango but ours are a booster, a convertible forward facing and an infant seat rear facing since our twins are 6lbs different in size. Our three year old is in the booster and the twins are just a week or two younger than your triplets.

(I have to admit the minute I saw your post I knew someone would post about the horrors of forward facing car seats and the veiled attempts at making you feel guilty. I do find it humorous that they have to post anonymously )

We chose to turn ours children around at the recommended 1 year 20 lb mark too (which is why I have one twin in a convertible - he's 22lbs and one twin in an infant seat - she's only 16 lbs)

I think you are a great mom! I am constantly impressed and amazed at how well you handle things!!

WOOHOO!! Yay for the 3 carseats fitting! I already tried that out, before Patrick was born. A friend of mine's car broke down and needed to go to the grocery store. She she and I, and Erin and her two piled into my car. And the 3 seats fit!

Looks sharp! I can't wait to see a pic of them in them!

Wow that anonymous commenter doesn't read your posts do they? All three kids are a year and 20 lbs. If you go to their birthday posts you'll see that. And as for rear facing being "safer" past one, i think thats more of the parents' choice. How do you know her kids don't scream their heads off when she's driving and make it so she's a poor driver? Being forward facing and happy is safer than backward facing and too stressed to drive.

It NEVER fails. LOL.

I knew when I saw the picture that you would get an anon. commenter commenting about Forward Facing.

I turned mine around because the car seats touched the captains chairs in front of them (which according to many sources is extremely unsafe). I had no choice....either that or ask one of my anon. commenters to buy me a $45K Dodge Sprinter. :) When we moved out of the smaller seats at 22 pounds and 13 months old....we turned them forward.

I kept my older 2 rear facing until they were 2 years old. Until you face the harsh reality of trying to get 3 little ones into the backseat of a car or van......no judgments.

Yeah, I am so happy for you they fit! Looks great! I too plan on turning my forward when they hit 1 year AND 20 lbs!

They look awesome Astrid :) Can't wait to see the kiddos in there!

YAY! So glad they fit. And I must say they DO go very nicely with the interior ;)

Astrid said...

Thanks for all the support ladies! To be honest, I would prefer them rear facing. I know it is better BUT the harsh reality is that we don't have the money for a car that is big enough. In a perfect world, I would have a Suburban or minivan but this world is not perfect nor will anonymous donate $40,000 for me to get a new car.

This is MY reality & I don't have much of a choice. At least we don't get out often. If it isn't 1 thing, it is another, right? In the end, we are all only humans.

Rock on sister - not only am I thrilled about them all fitting, I am totally stoked that you had them match the interior AND that you used the word FANTABULOUS! You freaking rock, momma! :)

Woohoo! We too have to buy new seats and they're only 8 months old! I have chunkers! I have a 4Runner and am constantly fretting over having 3 in a row. Many people suggested the Radians and since it worked for your car, it should work for mine.

What is it with the anonymous commenters lately? Its like the rude ones hide their identity.....I have had my share.
Anways,
It looks awesome and i am happy to see you get to keep the car after all.

Yikes on the anonymous commenter.

You must not love your children very much if you are only following the law. :)

We had ours turned around and in one row at 12 months. Then that came to an abrupt end when POOF! I was pregnant with number four! :)

Lurker here, glad to see that you didn't get defensive about the rear-facing comment, Astrid! It's hard to educate people about car seat safety when most of them are SO defensive! (I didn't write the previous comment though.)

I have a question, because I know nothing about the Radians. Is the reason you can't put them rear-facing in your car because the Radian's can't go rear-facing? Or is it because they take up more space that way? Just curious.

I'm so jealous, I regret not getting these seats!

They look awesome Astrid!

MDtripmom said...

I'm so excited for you that all 3 seats fit! We're in the same dilemma right now. Where did you order your Radians? Did you go with the 65's over the 80's because of price of because of the color?

Jennifer said...

Yay! (That's all I have to say!!) What a great relief off your chest that all three carseats fit in your current vehicle!

Astrid said...

Kayla ~ The seats won't fit in the car rear facing. I tried & they barely fit but that is w/ the front seat ALL the way up. This would make it IMPOSSIBLE to drive. I'm 5'10".

Jaime ~ After much research, we decided the 65s were going to be better b/c the kids would take some time to get to 65 lbs. By the time they are that big, they are somewhere around 7 yrs old. Also, they outgrow the length limit way before the weight limit. For instance, our trio is 31" right now, only an inch away from the length limit of their infant car seats but they are far from the weight limit (20.2, 21.9, & 23.9 lbs). We would pass the length limit in a month or so anyway.

For the record, I am not in the slightest bit offended by anonymous. I am grateful someone cares enough to comment, just in case I wasn't educated enough about the topic which obviously I am. I would love to rear face the kids but reality is much different than what we really want, now isn't it?

Lurker here, just wanted to say that is awesome that the Radians's fit! I am due with my 3rd in 7 weeks and I too have a small car, a Ford Focus. I was thrilled too, that 2 Radians and a snugride will fit in the backseat so I don't have to buy a new car. Rock on!

lurker said...

well as long as you werent offended by the anonymous poster then thats all that matters.
i know i surely wouldnt want someone commenting to me what i SHOULD do with my children. especially if i were obeying the law

If you find their heads flop forward the recline the CRV seats and re-install the carseats so that they are tilted back some ... it will solve the problem!

Looks god!!

That's great! Now I'm kind of annoyed that I assumed I needed a minivan and got rib of my Liberty... maybe my 3 wouldve in there too! Ah, well, it fits the giant stroller a little better I guess.

hi! i have week old triplets and finally need all 3 carseats (we've been getting away with taking home from hospital and to pediatrician one at a time to this point). you seem very thorough, what infant carseats did you use?

your trips are gorgeous!!

Hi! I just found your blog when I searched for "Will three car seats fit in a CR-V?". Ha! :) I wonder if you would share what year model your CR-V is. Mine is an '08, and I think the older body style (older than 2007) may have a little more room in the back. I currently have a Britax Marathon and a Graco Snugride. I would be thrilled if I could fit the a Snugride and 2 Marathons. I'm doubtful, though. I have read that the Radians are the narrowest ones available. Do you think you could get 2 Radians and a Snugride in there? Thanks so much! I'm enjoying your blog! :)

"Now, for some reason, the seatbelt isn't locking the seat in place."

Just curious, how did you fix this? I'm having the same problem in my '06.
